REPRESENTATIVE MARK SHELTON’S CAPITOL UPDATE 12/09
Interim Update
While the legislature is currently not in Session, I along with my staff, have still been very busy working on and studying possible legislation for the 82nd Legislative Session. Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, Speaker Straus released a list of interim studies for the legislature to address while not in session. I will be directly involved with issues pertaining to Public Education and Border Security, due to my membership on these committees. However, I will also be involved on other important issues such as reducing property taxes, requiring photo identification when voting, and healthcare at the State level.
North Texas Healthcare Summit
I was very proud and honored to work with the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce in hosting the first North Texas Healthcare Summit. the summit was attended by over 150 legislators, local elected officials, and community business leaders. This was a great opportunity to discuss and learn from experts the current state of healthcare on a local level. Additionally in regard to the federal debate, the government should implement real “health insurance reform” by encouraging patients to exercise more control over their own healthcare costs through better lifestyle choices. Insurance companies need to be encouraged to provide portability of health plans for patients, and patients need to be in control of their family’s health plan. Health insurance expenses for families should be deductible from federal income tax payments, just as businesses deduct their expenses.
H1N1 Flu
There has been a great deal of publicity about the flu this year. Both seasonal flu and H1N1 flu are spreading rapidly through schools and communities, causing many flu patients to be admitted into hospitals. It is important that the public stay informed and practice preventive measures, including immunization. Steps you can take to decrease your risk of contracting the flu and spreading it to others include: frequent hand washing and using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze and cough, and remaining at home if you are sick.
